The Adventures of Mabel (Notable American Authors)

The Adventures of Mabel
I remember reading this book over and over again as a child. I remember the tablature in the book, for the song that Mabel whistled to call the animals, and I remember playing the notes on the piano, so that I could memorize the tune in my head. I whistled that tune to every animal that I encountered for years, waiting for the magical response! I still remember the tune in my head today, and I have taught it to my daughter, hoping to find a copy of the book for her to read! I very nearly named my daughter after Mabel, because my memories of her are so vivid and wonderful!

Wonderful Book
I remember reading this book when I was nine. When I became a mother, this was THE book that stood out in my memory as a must have for my daughter. She is only a few months old, and already I am getting her a copy to hopefully pass down to her children some day. It is amazing how, decades later, I still remember the delight I got from reading these stories. I believe that any child that reads them can't help but end up make believing that they have these wonderful adventures, just like Mabel. These stories will delight a child's imagination and remain in their memory for years to come!

The Adventures of Mabel
This story was read to me in 2nd grade, and I thought it was the most beautiful and magical book I had ever read. It opens up a child's imagination, and makes you think you yourself are Mabel, having the wonderful adventures she does. It has been an EXTREMELY long time since I read this book, but I remember every detail vividly, as I will probably always do. I recommend this story to everyone, people of all ages. I will forever cherish the memories of this book in my heart.

Equator: A Journey
Published in Hardcover by William Morrow (October, 1988)
Author: Thurston Clarke

Perfect travel writing
I read this book years ago when it first came out. I keep going back and reading it again. I don't generally enjoy travel writing, but this book is simply one of the best I've ever read. Not just interesting, but witty and interesting, which is something much better.

The kind of book that you regret having read the first time because you'll never get to read it again for the first time!

Great company on a long trip
This is a difficult book not to like. I was worried at first that Clarke's tour of the equator might be a sort of weak gimmick, but he sticks to his plan only in so far as it helps bring to life the people and the cultures that he visits along the way. This is a very human book, with many stories of lives along the equator that are at once quite finely drawn but still pointing to the larger issues of environmental degradation overpopulation and disease. I think it is this very humanness that prevents it from seeming overly depressing or

A great travel book
Intelligent, insightful, and not at all patronizing of the cultures he visits. He did manage to hit some of the world's hell-holes along the way. The sections on French Guyana and the South Pacific were particularly interesting.

The Lost History of the Canine Race: Our 15,000-Year Love Affair With Dogs
Published in Hardcover by Andrews McMeel Publishing (October, 1996)
Author: Mary Elizabeth Thurston
Average review score:

excellant dog history
this is a wonderful book about dog orgins, i read it several years ago, and bought my own copy, a delightful read with lots of information.

Absolutely Fantastic!
I'm a dog lover and thought I knew everything canine. Apparently not! This book is chuckfull of information and trivia. I especially enjoyed the chapter on US Army dogs and how unfair the US government has been to them. A must read!

Lost History of the Canine Race
The dedication of Mary Elizabeth Thurston's book says it all. She dedicated this book to her grandmother, who taught her the importance of spoiling dogs. This is a person who knows the love of sharing their life with their dog, and writes about dogs from her heart and soul. I think the chapter that stirred the deepest interest was the Dogs of War. These brave dogs and their handlers have often been forgotten, but in Thurston's book they are not only remembered, but truly honored for their contribution to the freedom we enjoy today. Thank you for writing, not just a informational book, but one that shows how much our lives are intermingled with our canine companions.

The Best
The whole Trilogy is definetely the best of the Battletech Series.

It does not get any better.
This book is perfect. A long-time fan of the Battletech universe, I have read most of their books. This is absolutely one of my favorites. The Jade Pheonix Trilogy is a must for any science fiction fan.

Falcon Guard (Battletech: Legend of the Jade Phoenix, Volume 3)
Published in Paperback by New American Library (December, 1991)

Battletech Falcon Guard
I thought the book is a great piece of literature. It was my first book in the series of Battletech. After reading this I was sort of disappointed by the other stories I read later on in the series. The book contains lots of action which is usually intriguing in these kind of political books. It was the best book to start with. I was sort of saddened by the ending. This is a book that is special and stands out, so buy this book and read it.

Arguably the best battletech book ever
I had this one special ordered. This masterpiecie gracefully dictates the struggles and fights at Turdyyad, and has the highest position in my personal library. Adian Pryde is one of my favorite characters in liturature, and whenever I think of clan Jade falcon, I see the cover of Falcon Gaurd, with Adian's Timberwolf stomping across the tattered battleground of turkyadd, lasers blazing, and missiles flaring. This is an extremely epic novel, and I will forever cherish it.

The Spirit of the Clan Warriors
This book is probably the best I have read about the spirit of the Falcon Warriors in the War at Tukayyid. Dishonoured in the eyes of his fellow MechWarriors and assigned to the lowly Falcon Guards, Star Colonel Aidan Pryde rises once again as the Jade Pheonix to bring his Clan and the Falcon Guards to glory on Tukayyid. The fighting scenes depicted in here are well written and should be a book not to be missed by a loyal Jade Falcon fan.

We're Desperate: The Punk Rock Photography of Jim Jocoy, SF/LA 1978-1980
Published in Hardcover by powerHouse Books (November, 2002)
Authors: Jim Jocoy, Thurston Moore, Exene Cervenka, and Marc Jacobs
Average review score:

Brilliant!!
This is an absolutely brilliant book. It chronicles a time when punk was more than just some retarded fashion statement made for MTV (admittedly, MTV didn't exist...) Jim Jocoy has done his thing well, and efficiently shown the attitude of punk in the late 70's. One of the best things about this book is the fact that he didn't sift through people and pick out the ones that looked like models, or the pretty singers, he took anyone and everyone he could find that contributed to the punk rock movement. Even greater is the fact that he has pictures of bands and singers right next to the "normal" people, and to the untrained eye, nobody would know the difference. Everyone was impressive. I also loved the prose at the end by Exene Cervenka. It's very well-done and beautifully written.

The San Francisco Punk Scene told in Photographs.
When I first heard about this Book, I eagerly awaited it's arrival. An Excellent documentation of the Looks and visual attitude that was unique to the San Francisco Scene. Even though the Photos include LA, London and NYC Stars, that original San Francisco feeling still emerges overall. It cries out for more books exploring it's values different from other Punk or Rock scenes. But at least we have Jim's Excellent Documentations and memories. Hopefully More Books coming from him in the future!

before punk fashion was sold at the mall......
....the West Coast punk rock scenesters created a style that looks surprisingly fresh and edgy even today: pink 60s leather coats, striped tees, shredded preppy button-ups, busted jeans, high heels with anklets, asymetrical haircuts, teddy boy coats, geometric print 80s, shrunken suits w/ skinny ties, and more. This is a great book for DIY fashion ideas-- from a time when ripped tee-shirts didn't cost $75 at trendy boutiques and jeans didn't come pre-sandpapered.

Coaching Youth Baseball: A Baffled Parents Guide (Baffled Parent's Guides)
Published in Paperback by International Marine/Ragged Mountain Press (29 March, 2000)
Author: Bill Thurston
Average review score:

Good Starter Book
A Well Organized book, as a rookie coach last season, it gave me what I needed to know. I particularly liked the overview of safety presented up front -- too many people take this for granted and stupid injuries can result.

Be Advised though that the rest of the Baffled Parents Series doesn't necessarily live up to the standard set by this book - I found the Basketball book very average.

Baffled No More!
This was the first "Coaching" book I have purchased. The book provides excellent insight into what is truly involved in coaching a youth baseball team. The practice planner section was a big help in conducting an organized and effectice practice. I highly recommend this book to beginning coached like myself or seasoned veterans.

The Bentley Collection Guide 8th Edition : The reference tool for collectors of Longaberger Baskets(r)

Authors: Jill Rindfuss, Andrew Korcok, Terry Thurston, and Jull Rindfuss

The Longaberger Consultant and Bentley's Guide
I am a Longaberger consultant and have every Bentley's Guide ever published, including an autographed first copy. It is a great help in promoting the value of our products (the fact that they appreciate, not depreciate)! It has been of great help in increasing insurance coverage, not only for myself, but also for customers. I had one customer who lost items in a fire; we used the guide for the replacement value for the insurance company. I now have customers who purchase their own Guide.

The Bentley Collection Guide 8th Edition : The reference too
This was a great book. I wish that I had the book earlier, when I first started collecting Longaberger Baskets. This is a very good reference book I will use for years to come.

THE Book for Longaberger Collectors
This is the book to use to evaluate your Longaberger collection or to help evaluate a basket before you buy. A must for any collector that trades on the secondary market! The book is divided into sections by basket type and includes an index for quick referencing. Take it along to the next basket auction you attend!

1000 Questions About Your Pregnancy
Published in Paperback by Summit Pub Group (01 November, 1997)
Authors: Jeffrey Thurston and Jeffrey Thurston M. D.
Average review score:

An informative, educational, must have book for mothers-to-be.
Dr Thurston's book is everything I thought it would be and more. I have read many other books on pregnancy and have found Dr. Thurston's book to be a very honest, informative, and easy-to-read guide through pregnancy. It truly does answer all of the questions one could possibly have on your pregnancy.

A must for pregnant women everywhere.
How refreshing to finally have a pregnancy book which answers just about every question a pregnant woman could have! This is my second pregnancy and I wish I would have had it for my first. Other popular pregnancy books like one which should be named "What NOT To Expect When You're Expecting", focus on "problems" during pregnancy and really had me scared during my first pregnancy. Unlike other pregnancy books, this one was actually written by a doctor. Dr. Thurston gives very straight-forward answers that are both reassuring and informative. I especially like the section on medications which are safe to use during pregnancy (this alone saves many unnecessary phone calls). This book provides the facts with a sense of humor that make reading it a very worthwhile experience. I will certainly give this book to all my pregnant friends

A valuable tool for all expectant moms!
As a fourth time mother-to-be, I thought I had no need for yet another book on pregnancy. How wrong I was! As each pregnancy is different from the rest, I had unexpected questions which arose from time to time. Instead of calling the doctor in the middle of the night, I refered to this wonderful book. This well-written and reassuring book is written in a question and answer-type format. Expectant moms will find "1000 Questions About Your Pregnancy" to be insightful and delightful, as Dr. Thurston sprinkles his answers with occasional bits of humor. As this is the most informative book I have read on pregnancy (and delivery), it is easily my favorite. You will be so glad you have this excellent book on your nightstand!

Way of the Clans (Battletech: Legend of the Jade Phoenix, Volume 1)
Published in Paperback by New American Library (October, 1994)

Jaded Phoenix of the Clan Jade Falcon
Good Book - Good Story...

Clan Jade Falcon is seen here with some rather interesting UnClan like happenings, but when thoroughly read 1-3 you will find that the entire series is very well worked out to the very end of the story of Aidan Pryde.

Folks that do not know much about the Clans will get some insight into their world and the feelings of Clanners vs. Spheroids (Inner Sphere people); to include the Freeborn and Trueborn castes and intermingling that happens between these people. Very insightful. -Remember though the unclan like statement at the beginning - it will rise up again in the books.

Good Reading to all...

A little dated now, but still a winner
This novel introduced me to Battletech. While I've never played the RPG, I've managed to continue collecting and reading all of the novels. This one, without a doubt, is an excellent novel. Introducing Aidan Pryde of Clan Jade Falcon, Battletech readers are introduced to the Way of the Clans. This first volume details how Clan warriors are bred and trained. We follow Aidan on his exploits through Clan space as he attempts to become a warrior for the Jade Falcons. Readers are also introduced to Marthe Pryde, who continues to play a role in the current Battletech storyline. This novel is an excellent bridge into the Battletech universe. Unfortunately, with Mechwarrior: Dark Age being released, this book is behind the times, but if you can find the Legend of the Jade Phoenix Trilogy, I thoroughly recommend it. See also Blood of Kerensky Trilogy for more about the Clans.

I'm enthralled with Battletech
I first came to Battletech by playing the Mechwarrior2 computer game. When I found out there were novels set in the Battletech Universe I figured this was a good place to start.

What a story! Great mech action and human drama, with a nice lead to the next book(s). The characters were well developed, interesting and strong. You get a great feel of how a Clan warrior is created and what they have to go through to become warriors. It's pretty brutal stuff. I went out and purchased Bloodname and Falcon Guard right after I finished it just to make sure I had them on hand.

A good book, and great place to begin the Battletech journey!
